There are many mentions of John Cronin in Liam Cahill's book, "Forgotten Revolution: Limerick Soviet 1919, A Threat To British Power In Ireland" (The O'Brien Press, 1990, ISBN 0-86278-194-9) and a photograph.

"The Limerick Trades and Labour Council was established in May 1905...Many members of the trades council were fairly suspicious of the new politics emanating from 'advanced' trade union elements in Dublin, particularly after the Irish TUC decision of 1912 to form an Irish Labour Party. In 1916 John Cronin, who later led the Soviet, was prepared to characterise the Dublin leadership as a 'socialist clique' and feared that 'the movement was run entirely by people who never worked at any trade or labour or were at present not following any trade or labour'.

"Early in January [1919]...a meeting [was] held at the O'Connell Monument in Limerick to protest at the treatment of political prisoners in the local prison...[T]he speakers included John Cronin, president of Limerick United Trades and Labour Council.

From an informal History of Limerick by Jeremiah Cronin

"My father, John Cronin, who was Chairman of the Special Committee, called a meeting and put before them the position of permits as relating to the workers. As he said, "It is bad enough for a man to go to work without looking for a permit from an Alien Government to do so." An order was then made for a General Strike."

3 "My grand aunt Kate and my uncle Joe were politically very conscious as well as very religious. My aunt had been an active anti-Parnellite. She was reputed to have shown up at one of the Parnell meetings with a hatchet under her cloak and had been dissuaded from throwing it at the platform by her very gentle husband.

"Aunt Kate was a formidable woman. She was almost the exact opposite of her sister, my gentle grandmother. She spoke with very precise diction and had an air of authority and decision. She fully approved of the rebellion, having lost faith in the Irish Party. Once my uncle remarked to me in his mild voice and kindly manner that, despite evrything, Parnell was a good man. In her most level tone, putting the matter beyond dispute or further discussion, Aunt Kate said 'Sir, Parnell was not a good man, he was a thoroughly bad man.' I was frozen by the intensity of her feeling and had no difficulty in resisting the temptation to ask about the truth of the hatchet story."

'Dublin Made Me' by C.S. (Todd) Andrews, p.93

When Walter Cousins was to first meet his in-laws, he drove Irene to Longford in the sidecar of his motorcycle. Irene asked her mother what she thought of Walter. "Isn't he very small, Irene?"

4 "My grandfather, Christopher Moran, had been an Inspector in the Dublin Metropolitan Police. He married late in life and he and my grandmother rented number 42 Summerhill, where he died soon after his retirement, leaving four young children."

5 "My grandmother was not a Dublin woman by birth. Her parents had orinally been small farmers on the estate of the famous eighteenth century buck, 'Buck' Whaley, near Wicklow. The family was evicted from their holding and it was said that her sister, Kate, had been born on the roadside as the family moved up to Dublin. They settled for a while in a basement in Harry Street, off Grafton Street, and started buying milk and re-selling it door to door."
